Reader letter: The Walker-Warnock debate conundrum

Savannah Morning News

It appears that Herschel Walker and Raphael Warnock’s campaign teams have dug their heels in regarding which television station will broadcast their debate; one has agreed to work with WTOC and the other WSAV. This needs to get settled so that the people of Savannah can hear their plans to tackle such pressing issues as the economy, gun safety, healthcare, immigration and climate change, to name a few.

The solution is simple. The League of Women Voters, a non-partisan organization whose members are both Democrats and Republicans, has for more than 100 years worked to empower U.S. voters through educational events such as candidate forums.

In this image from video, Herschel Walker speaks from Westlake, Texas, during the first night of the Republican National Convention on Monday.

The League of Women Voters of Coastal Georgia (LWVCGA) sent letters to both candidates last Wednesday, inviting them to participate in such a forum on a date that is mutually agreeable to them. It would be held at Savannah State University and be covered by the LWVCGA’s media partner, WJCL - channel 22, the ABC affiliate here in Savannah, which would make the broadcast available throughout Georgia via its network of ABC stations. The station's senior anchor would moderate the event.

The candidates were also sent the LWV guidelines for the conduct of the forum, guidelines that have stood the test of time, and meet federal and state election laws and regulations to ensure a fair and orderly exchange of ideas.

We hope they will accept these good-faith invitations that will support our mission of encouraging informed and active participation in government.
