Local attorney Stephenie Gookins, who ran in but lost the May primary election for the newly created Superior Court 7 to court magistrate Darren Murphy, will now get a seat on the bench as the appointed replacement for Superior Court 6 Judge Gail Bardach, who retired July 1.

Governor Eric J. Holcomb announced Stephenie K. Gookins as his appointment on Tuesday.

Hamilton County Republican Party Chair Mario Massillamany released the following statement Tuesday afternoon:

“Stephenie currently is a partner in the law firm of Terry & Gookins and has been in private practice in Hamilton County since 2000. She has also served as a public defender in various Hamilton County courts for the past 21 years. Stephenie received a bachelor of science from Indiana University and a law degree from the Indiana University McKinney School of Law. She will be sworn in as the Judge of the Hamilton County Superior Court on a date to be determined. Stephenie Gookins has been a strong supporter of the Hamilton County Republican Party, attending events, helping with fundraisers, and promoting Republican candidates. Congratulations to Stephenie on this prestigious judicial appointment.”
