Hammond man sentenced 50 years in prison for raping a woman during a home burglary
District Attorney Warren Montgomery reports that a Hammond man has pled guilty to several crimes he committed back in Convington in July of 2020 and was sentenced to 50 years in prison. James Michael Buckley, 44, broke into a woman's house in Convington while she was making lunch and he was armed with a knife. Buckley held the woman down, raped her, and lit a cigarette in her kitchen, which he left burning on the counter. The victim was taken to the hospital for her injuries, where a rape kit was completed. Before attacking his victim, he tried to attack another victim just a few blocks away. He knocked on her door, asking her to come in to use her phone. The victim refused to let him in. However, he later returned to that residence, trying to enter. Buckley was arrested the next day after he was seen riding a bicycle, carrying a chainsaw and a vehicle jump starter which was later determined to be stolen from the rape victim's house. DNA analysis was performed by the Coroner's office, and DNA from the crime scenes linked Buckley to the crimes. Buckley pleaded guilty to second-degree rape, sexual battery, home invasion, simple burglary of an inhabited dwelling, and two counts of attempted simple burglary of an inhabited dwelling.
