GORHAM (WGME) -- A barn was destroyed and several cows are dead after a fire in Gorham Tuesday night.
Fire officials say it took more than an hour to get control over the massive blaze.
Crews responded to Flaggy Meadow Farm, a dairy farm on Flaggy Meadow Road, around 8:40 p.m.
When they arrived on scene, they began evacuating the dozens of cows inside.
Luckily, many of them were able to escape and were brought to a nearby pasture. No people were hurt.
Gorham Fire Chief Ken Fickett said they were able to keep the fire from spreading to multiple nearby houses or other buildings on the farm.
Flaggy Meadow Road was closed for hours Tuesday night as six area fire departments fought the blaze.
The cause of the fire is still under investigation.
CBS 13's Charlie Lopresti noted Tuesday night that there was so much smoke from the fire that it began showing up on out weather radars.
Flaggy Meadows says they plan on rebuilding. They also said their milk cows were relocated and their dry cows and heifers will stay in a separate barn that is still standing.
"The priority for us when we arrived were the exposures involved. There was no way we could've saved the barn,” Fickett said. "We were very pleased, and the homeowner is very pleased that the strategy that we used, they have their milk room left, they have both their silos left."
Fickett added that pictures neighbors took before he arrived helped him figure out what areas to focus on.
Police officers, veterinarians, and people who worked there as kids have come to check on the family.
A GoFundMe page has been setup to help the farm rebuild.
