A paramedic, police officer and trooper were among at least four people hit by a car Tuesday night while working the scene of a motorcycle crash on Pamplico Highway in Florence, according to Florence County Sheriff TJ Joye.
Two people died when a vehicle that was not involved in the initial collision drove through the crash scene, according to Florence County Emergency Medical Services (EMS).
In an online post, the department said one of the two killed was a paramedic.
"We are heartbroken and overwhelmed by grief as we announce that two people died following this incident, including one of our paramedics," Florence County EMS posted on Facebook. "Those who died as a result of this incident will be identified by the Florence County Coroner in due time. We ask for prayers for everyone involved."
According to coroner Keith von Lutcken, the names are expected to be released Wednesday.
"Our thoughts and prayers go out tonight to all Florence County First Responders and their families," Darlington County EMS said. "We are here for you, our brothers and sisters. God Bless and give you comfort."
Joye said the original crash happened when two motorcycles crashed near a car wash and used car lot. One of the motorcyclists crashed into several used cars and the injuries were severe.
The driver who crashed into the first responders is in the hospital, Joye said.
He was told the driver was an elderly woman but is not sure of her exact age. Her condition isn’t being released.
Joye added a trooper is recovering from a head injury and several people went to the hospital.
As of Wednesday morning, the road was shut down at the 1500 block of Pamplico Highway and traffic was being turned around.
Joye said Myrtle Beach's Crash Reconstruction Team is helping the investigation and that is why the highway is still closed.
More than 50 law-enforcement officers, firefighters and paramedics gathered on the scene Tuesday night.
