Flag raising ceremony honors fallen EPSO Deputy

COLORADO SPRINGS — The El Paso County Sheriff’s Office held a flag raising ceremony on Friday in front of the downtown Sheriff’s Office.

The ceremony honored Sheriff’s Deputy Andrew Peery, who was killed in the line of duty on August 7. A former Marine, identified as 26-year-old Alexandra “Alex” Paz was also found dead at the scene. The suspect, John Paz, was found dead of a self-inflicted gunshot wound later that day.

The flag raising ceremony took place at 9 a.m. on Friday, August 12, in front of the El Paso County Sheriff’s Office at 27 East Vermijo Avenue.

The community said they came out to support Deputy Peery, as well as his family.

“My deepest condolences to you for your loss. I know that we as a community support you,” said Carol Holloway.

“We’re here for them,” said Geneva Fulmer. “They might not know us by name, but we’re here. We’re silently in the wings ready to support wherever we can.”

The flag raised in the ceremony will be used to drape Deputy Peery’s casket at his upcoming funeral service.
