COURT DOCUMENTS: Assembly Candidate tried to stop Jackson Jews from Praying

According to new documents obtained by TLS, Jackson Councilman Alex Sauickie – who is being considered for the seat to replace the late Ron Dancer – worked to bar Jews in Jackson from having a place to pray.

According to a court-mandated deposition, Mr. Sauickie worked alongside former councilmen Nixon and Calogero to make praying in Jackson more difficult for its Jewish minority.

Both Nixon and Calogero were forced to resign from office due to allegations of anti-semitism.

Two state-elected officials who were informed of this testimony today realesed a joint statement to TLS. They provided the statement anonymously in fear of retaliation.

“The documents are shocking, and no race or religion should be subject to such harassment.”

  1. When asked about Tuesday’s TLS revelation that Jackson Councilman Alex Sauickie, who is running for district 12 seat, worked to bar Jews from having a place to pray, one Jewish resident of Jackson, told reporters, “My friends and I prayed fervently today that he shouldn’t win. Thank the Lord, we found a place to pray.”

  2. Does anyone ask why they don’t want us living there? It must be this mysterious mist in the air that causes people to not like us. It couldn’t in anyway be anything else.

    • On every such article, without fail, there is one self-hating loser who defends the racist, bigots and blames the victim. How utterly pathetic.

If people have legitimate concerns about over-development (which clearly is not happening in Jackson), there are appropriate, respectful, lawful ways to address it.

Using these concerns as an excuse to engage in hate, racism, bigotry and harming others who practice a different religion is despicable and should never be tolerated and should be cause for prosecution when applicable.

      • Isn’t it great going through life without ever having to do any self-reflection? Its never my fault. My neighbor hates me because he hates me.
My neighbor complained to me about my kids leaving garbage on his beautiful lawn, my kids riding their bikes through his flowers, and my kids constantly running into his yard to get their balls.
My response was, “You sir, are an Antisemite!”
My son said, “Tatty maybe it is because how we behave.”
I said, “My son we are Frum. The means we’re the most heilig special nation on earth. The only reason he’s complaining is because he’s jealous of our Torah lifestyle and takes it out on us as hatred and Antisemitism.”

        • BTW, I live in Jackson, my kids DON”T leave garbage on lawns, Don’t ride bikes through flowerbeds, don’t trample yards to retrieve balls……and they still hate us!!! Oh, and you should speak to yourself about your children’s behavior, not your children. Restart your Chinuch.

  3. One of the biggest issues I think many of the non-Orthodox have about the Orthodox moving into communities surrounding Lakewood is this : they see the irresponsible overdevelopment that has taken place especially with complete collapse of infrastructure, traffic, and high density. I know even your community moving into other towns do not want it! Most of the Orthodox I speak with tell me this. Also, public school funding deteriorating is another big issue for the people of neighboring towns. Don’t the non-Orthodox have a right to not want our public schools be hundreds of millions of dollars in debt like Lakewood? Some level of mutual understanding from both sides needs to be in place for other other community’s needs, even if we may not mingle with each other.

    • The Orthodox community in Lakewood pays obscene, staggering amounts of money each year towards the public school system that they have almost zero benefit from. They are the ones who should be extremely frustrated and angry about the public school funding system. Not the other way around!

      • If you understood how the public schools were setup and run you’d think differently. If you want to send your child to public school you’re more than welcome to and its free. However, if you CHOOSE (for whatever reason, religious beliefs don’t change the reality that you do have a choice) to send your child to a private school the onus of paying tuition rests on your shoulders.

  4. By the way, I am sorry for the non-Orthodox who did not respect your right to practice your religion. That is unconstitutional and a disrespect to your religious freedom. Please know most of us are not like that!

    • They say they just want to limit overdevelopment. meanwhile, Jackson’s courting non-Jewish developers to make new warehouse districts, Jackson Health Village, sports complexes, public schools, etc.

But making an eiruv, a sukkah, gathering at a neighbor’s house to pray or making a small school Jewish school for Jackson children is considered overdevelopment.

They made rules aimed specifically to keep us, and only us, out. And then only applied the laws to us. The antisemitism we would experience on the street was open and palpable.
