One person was dead and others injured after a bus traveling from New York to Philadelphia overturned Tuesday night on the New Jersey Turnpike in Woodbridge, officials said.

“There is one confirmed fatality and five serious injuries” New Jersey State Police Trooper Charles Marchan told NJ Advance Media. “The outer roadway and service area ramp are closed for the investigation.”

The crash happened at 6:53 p.m. on the Turnpike’s Thomas Edison Service Area entrance ramp from the outer roadway, Marchan said. The incident also involved a pickup truck but it was unclear exactly how the crash happened.

The bus, which was carrying 20 people, went off the road to the right and overturned on the ramp of the service area, police said. The outer roadway remained closed as of midnight as the crash remained under investigation.

The bus that overturned was a Megabus headed from New York to Philadelphia, according to company spokesman Dan Rodriguez. There were 19 passengers on the bus along with a driver.

“We have personnel headed to the area to assess the situation,” the spokesman said around 9 p.m.

Video on social media showed a State Police medical helicopter along with numerous emergency vehicles near the crash scene.

Fire crews from Port Reading, Fords, Woodbridge and Perth Amboy were among other rescuers at the scene, according to the Woodbridge Township Professional Firefighters Association.

In May, 27 people were hurt when a Megabus carrying 47 people crashed and rolled on I-95 north of Baltimore.
