The New England Patriots have several questions as training camp continues on in August. How will the pass rush look?

Can Mac Jones make a jump in year two?

But there is also a question of the production at linebacker. Well, there could be an answer now to that problem!

Roquan Smith, All-Pro linebacker for the Chicago Bears, requested a trade this morning.

This trade request comes just weeks before the regular season is slated to start. So it opens the discussion: could the New England Patriots trade for Roquan Smith?

The New England Patriots get a proven linebacker in Roquan Smith

Let’s face it, the New England Patriots could use a linebacker of  Smith’s ability. Look at the question marks that surround the Patriots linebacker room.

Will guys like Cam McGrone and Anfernee Jennings make actual contributions on the field this year? How will Mack Wilson look after being traded from the Browns earlier in the off-season? Can a guy like Josh Uche step up?

While the Patriots have all of these questions, Roquan Smith could be a guy that comes in and makes immediate impact. He’s quick, strong, and can get to the quarterback really well. He had three sacks and 163 total tackles for the Bears in 2021. That’s somebody the Patriots need! A guy that can get in there and make tackles.

Will the New England Patriots ACTUALLY trade for Roquan Smith?

This is the question that I have as a Patriots fan. WILL the Patriots actually do what they can to get Roquan Smith to Gillette Stadium? I’d be hard-pressed to say it probably won’t happen.

The Patriots recently just traded N’Keal Harry to the Bears less than a month ago. When was the last time you saw two teams in any league trade with each other two transactions in a row? Quick answer: you don’t see it! So I would be very shocked to see the Bears engage with the Patriots again. Especially when N’Keal Harry could be out for an extended period of time!

The bottom line with the New England Patriots and Roquan Smith

The bottom line is that the defense was the big question mark for the Patriots heading into training camp. This is a guy that can help make an immediate impact in your defensive scheme.

Plus, Smith is on the last year of his rookie contract. If you can get Smith for somewhat cheap value somehow, you can let him walk at the end of the season.

With the likes of Christian Barmore, Lawrence Guy, Matt Judon, and others; Smith could help bolster the defense to a whole new level. Why not take a flyer on a guy that wants out of Chicago and in a place where he’ll be treated fairly in contract negotiations?

The New England Patriots would be foolish to not at least call the Bears about Roquan Smith. An All-Pro linebacker who wants out of his current situation AND can help you right away? Make the call, Bill!
