Summit County’s version of the Tour de France, the Breck Epic, will return to the region’s trails from Sunday, Aug. 14, to Friday Aug. 19.

Similar to the multistage cycling race that takes place primarily in France, the Breck Epic spans across six days on six separate stages where competitors complete big, backcountry mountain bike loops that range anywhere from 35 to 50 miles long.

Beyond touring around the pristine trails surrounding Summit County, the race is also unique in that each stage starts and finishes within a mile of downtown Breckenridge, allowing competitors to stay within the town for the duration of the event.

This year’s race will span from 220 to 240 miles in length and feature roughly 40,000 feet of vertical gain and loss. The six stages of the race include Pennsylvania Creek, Colorado Trail, Guyot, Aqueduct, Wheeler and Gold Dust.

Guyot, Wheeler and Gold Dust will each feature a hand-off of food or drink during the race, giving riders something to look forward to during the stages. Skittles candy will be handed off at the top of French Pass, bacon during the Wheeler stage and a Pabst Blue Ribbon beer on the return leg of Gold Rush.

The event will feature talent from Summit County and across the U.S. Among the assumed local riders participating in the event will be brothers Lasse and Nico Konecny.

Lasse Konecny made his debut in the event last year, placing ninth overall, and will look to improve upon his finish in 2021 by placing within the top five at this year’s competition. If Nico Konecny toes the line alongside his brother, the 16-year-old will be making his debut in the six-day epic.

To kickoff the Breck Epic, Beaver Run Resort, in conjunction with Breck Film, will host a free outdoor screening of Teton Gravity Research’s “Esperanto” Saturday, Aug. 13. The film will be hosted on the decks of Coppertop and Spencer’s Restaurant at Beaver Run Resort, 620 Village Road, and doors will open at 7:30 p.m. with the film starting at 8 p.m.
