MIAMI GARDENS — The Dolphins moved to thin out their tight end room Tuesday by trading veteran Adam Shaheen to the Houston Texans in a deal also involving a swap of low-round draft picks.

The Dolphins sent a 2023 seventh-round pick to Houston and received the Texans’ sixth-rounder.

Shaheen was obtained by the Dolphins in the summer of 2020 from the Chicago Bears, who made him their second-round pick in 2017.

Shaheen, 27, appeared in 12 games, starting seven, last season but seemed destined to see diminished playing time with Miami this season — if he made the roster at all.

Shaheen made 12 catches each of his two seasons in Miami but had 150 yards and three touchdowns in 2020. Last season he managed 110 yards and did not score.

The Dolphins still have tight ends Mike Gesicki, Durham Smythe, Hunter Long, Cethan Carter and Tanner Conner.
