TYBEE ISLAND, Ga. (WTGS) —
The Chatham County Health Dept. issued a beach water advisory on Tuesday for South Beach at Chatham Street on Tybee Island, according to officials.

The advisory was only for the area extending from 18th Street to Inlet Avenue. According to a press release, when a beach is under advisory, the level of bacteria found in the water is above the Environmental Protection Agency's recommended standards.
Officials said occasional advisories are not unusual. Sources of the bacteria could include animal waste, stormwater runoff, or boating waste.

The beach is not closed because of the advisory, but the health department recommends avoiding swimming or wading in the water.
