High-speed motorcycle chase in Hempfield results in probation, house arrest sentence

A Scottdale man pleaded guilty this week to charges in connection with a high-speed motorcycle chase last summer that police said reached speeds in excess of 107 mph.

Cameron Scott Ulery, 27, told a Westmoreland County judge he fled from police after leaving Live! Casino Pittsburgh at Westmoreland Mall in Hempfield because he was drunk and was operating his motorcycle without a valid license, registration and insurance.

“I am not a criminal. I just made a mistake,” Ulery said.

He pleaded guilty to a felony charge of fleeing and attempting to elude a police officer, two drunk driving counts and nine traffic summary offenses in connection with the July 10, 2021 incident.

According to court records, police contend Ulery failed to stop for a traffic sign at the intersection of Slate Run Road and Old Route 30 in Hempfield then sped off after he attempted a “wheelie.”

Police said Ulery nearly struck another vehicle and partially lost control of his motorcycle as he sped away. Police pursued and abandoned the chase when their cruiser reached a speed of 107 mph yet was not keeping up with the motorcycle.

A subsequent investigation identified Ulery as the motorcyclist through a search of security records at the casino. He was arrested three hours later at his home. According to court records, he was found to have a blood alcohol content of 0.146%, beyond the limit a motorist in Pennsylvania is considered to be intoxicated.

Police said Ulery crashed his motorcycle before arriving home. The damaged bike was found by police parked in front of his residence, according to court records.

Ulery admitted his guilt in court on Monday, but denied he “popped a wheelie” prior to the chase. “That’s the one thing I didn’t do,” Ulery said.

Common Pleas Court Judge Tim Krieger ordered Ulery to serve five years on probation including 12 months of house arrest.
