Man accused in Hillsborough County murder arrested by FMPD officers

Officers with the Fort Myers Police Department arrested Tuesday a second Lee County man accused of first-degree murder in Tampa.

Demon Jamaol Speed, 29, of Fort Myers, had a warrant out of Hillsborough County, according to a Facebook post from the Fort Myers Police Department.

Officers with the department's Group Violence Intervention Unit, along with the U.S. Marshals Service, arrested Speed.

The other suspect, Darren Day, 25, from Lehigh Acres, was arrested Aug. 2 on a count of first-degree murder by the U.S. Marshals Service in Lee County.

Around 3:30 p.m. July 22, someone called the Hillsborough County Sheriff's Office to report man had been shot in the parking lot of the IQ Apartments, in the 12700 block of Bruce B. Downs Boulevard, in Tampa. 

Deputies learned the suspects had driven from the scene in an unknown direction, according to a press release from the Hillsborough County Sheriff's Office. 

The victim died at a hospital.

Day and Speed have a criminal history in Lee County, jail records indicate.

Speed had been arrested, at least, five times in Lee County, jail records indicate.

Charges include robbery; aggravated assault with a deadly weapon; larceny; carrying an unlicensed firearm; and drug trafficking.

The News-Press has reached out to the Hillsborough County Sheriff's Office for comment on the latest arrests, but they only provided a press release.
