(WFXR) — Virginia State Police are turning to the southwest Virginia community for help as they investigate the destruction of ATMs at banks in Dickenson and Buchanan counties.
According to authorities, the first incident took place around 1 a.m. on Saturday, July 30 in the Town of Haysi. Even though the ATM in the drive-thru lane of the New Peoples Bank in the 100 block of Main Street was destroyed, no cash was taken.
Then, at approximately 2 a.m. on Monday, Aug. 8, police say a second incident took place at the New Peoples Bank on Route 460 — more specifically, the 22,400 block of Anchorage Street — in the Town of Grundy using the same tactics. This time, though, not only was the ATM destroyed, but it was also robbed of its cash.
At this stage of the investigation, officials tell WFXR News that it appears the same three individuals were involved in both incidents.
Authorities say a dark-colored, 2018-2022 Toyota Camry with Florida plates was connected with the Haysi ATM robbery. In addition, there is reportedly evidence that an F-250 pickup truck was also involved in both thefts.
If you have any information about either ATM robbery, you are asked to contact Virginia State Police by calling 276-228-3131 or emailing questions@vsp.virginia.gov.
