Tuesday, August 9 is the eight year anniversary of when a Ferguson, Missouri police officer shot and killed 18-year-old Michael Brown.
According to most accounts, Brown and his friend Dorian Johnson had been walking in the street when Officer Darren Wilson demanded they get on the sidewalk, then pulled over to confront them. After an altercation, Wilson fired shots, six of which hit Brown.
Brown's body was left in the middle of the street for about four hours.
Wilson was not indicted in the shooting. That August, Ferguson and the greater St. Louis area saw historic protests, some of which left businesses closed or destroyed. But, the marches also led to a new generation of racial justice activists.
Among them, Congresswoman Cori Bush. Bush said in a statement that she carries Michael Brown's memory as she continues to push for social and racial justice and a transformative approach to public safety.
