Every summer, New Yorkers and visitors from afar flock to the Hamptons for a season of luxe relaxation. And in Montauk in particular, what used to be a quiet surf town has become a hot spot for jet-setters and partygoers (while still giving off an old-school vibe). High-end resort Gurney’s has been a popular Montauk destination since it was a family inn and is credited for helping to reinvent the town. Now, the resort is once again turning the page in an effort to make the eastern tip of Long Island a year-round getaway, this time by bringing a popular New York gem to the spot.
Renovating during the pandemic, the ocean-side resort unveiled its 30,000-square-foot renovated spa this summer. A major part of the revamp? Four thermal pools created by the architect who designed New York’s AIRE Ancient Baths. Anyone who’s spent time at AIRE knows the various thermal pools—and even a zero-gravity pool—nestled inside the dark, steamy room create the perfect dose of tranquility in bustling TriBeCa. Gurney’s set out to re-create the AIRE vibe, but with a beachy twist.
The thermal, marine-inspired pools, ranging from 50 degrees to 104 degrees Fahrenheit, sit above a seawater pool that pulls in and filters water straight from the ocean (while also looking out onto it). For added bliss, guests can lounge in the eucalyptus steam room atop heated benches in between dips.
Not only are the pools calming, but the treatments are just as peaceful. The spa is a one-stop wellness oasis. The menu features curated facials in collaboration with brands like One Ocean Beauty and Dr. Dennis Gross, as well as deep-tissue massages. In addition, the spa incorporates techniques like halotherapy, which uses Himalayan salt crystals to heal the body and release tension, as well as CBD to relieve pain and elevate massages. There is even a head treatment featuring a hydrafacial on the scalp to promote healthy hair.
The space is ultra-luxurious as well. There is a cozy waiting room filled with neutral-hued stone and wooden panels (mimicking the natural elements around the spa), which sets the mood for the relaxing treatment that is to come.
But the real stars of the spa are the outdoor treatment rooms. Each room has a shower, a bath, and a lounging area that has a window peeking out onto the ocean. Does it get better than an ocean-side massage with waves crashing in the background?
No matter the time of year, Gurney’s new spa is the perfect dose of relaxation to feel refreshed and renewed.
