AUBURN — Davis graduate Shawn Abeyta earned a first-round TKO over Jordan Ferrier during MMA Fight Quest 6 on Saturday night.

Abeyta, who improved his amateur record to 4-1, won the fight with a power shot up the middle two minutes into the first round. It was scheduled for three rounds.

Bouncing back from a shoulder injury that forced him out of his last scheduled fight, Abeyta is hoping for another appearance in the Fusion Fight League in Montana next month but has already signed to fight in Yakima on Oct. 8.

Kim misses U.S. Amateur cutUNIVERSITY PLACE — If not for two wayward holes, Cassie Kim would be right in the thick of things at the 122nd U.S. Women’s Amateur.

But those two holes made a painfully huge difference for the Davis graduate, who barely missed the cut for the second straight year after Tuesday’s second round of stroke play at Chambers Bay Golf Course.

After posting one of the best rounds of her career on Monday with a 3-under 70, Kim shot an 8-over 81 on Tuesday with a triple bogie on the seventh hole and a quadruple bogie on the par-5 final hole. Her 151 total missed the cut to Wednesday’s match play by one stroke.

At last year’s U.S. Amateur in New York, Kim shot 6-over 150 and missed the cut in a two-for-12 tiebreaker that produced the overall winner.

Heading into her senior year this fall at Gonzaga, where she has been a WGCA All-American Scholar for three straight years, Kim lit it up on Monday, recording four birdies on the front nine, including two on par-5s that are over 500 yards in length. She made the turn in 33 and finished the day tied for eighth in the field of 156 qualifiers.

Aside from the two difficult holes Tuesday, Kim was 1-over for the day and was well within the cut line heading to the 18th hole.
