The Christian County Colonels very nearly got the 2022 season started off with a nice road win. The Colonels opened the season Monday night making the journey to travel to Franklin-Simpson to get the new year rolling.

The Wildcats had reached the semifinals of the 4th Region tournament in 2021 and figured to be a good test for the Colonels.

Christian County battled and made the Wildcats work, but in the end it was Franklin-Simpson taking a close 2-1 win.

Much like the 2021 season, the Colonels’ defense kept them in the match and gave them an opportunity to pick up their first season-opening win since 2016, when they knocked off UHA to open the year.

The Wildcats scored around the 15th minute to take the early 1-0 lead. Bryan Linares tied it up about 10 minutes later with a penalty kick.

Franklin-Simpson would then take the lead for good at the 37th minute.

The defense for both teams then clamped down in the second half.

Colonels’ goalie Josh Settle finished the match with 22 saves.

The Colonels will be back going for the first win of the season Thursday when they go on the road to take on Logan County.
