SPIRIT LAKE—An Orange City 14-year-old died of injuries suffered in an all-terrain vehicle accident about 2:30 p.m. Sunday, Aug. 7, near Spirit Lake.

Syerah E. Van Muyden was a passenger on a 2012 Polaris Ranger 800 being driven by another 14-year-old south on Basswood Lane in the area of East Oaks North when the driver lost control of the ATV, according to the Dickinson County Sheriff’s Office.

The four-wheeler rolled onto its side and struck a tree, ejecting the driver and Van Muyden.

The two teenagers were transported to Lakes Regional Healthcare in Spirit Lake, where Van Muyden was pronounced dead.

The driver was treated for non-incapacitating injuries and was released from the hospital.

The ATV was owned by Scott Groeneweg of Orange City.

The accident remains under investigation, according to the sheriff’s office.

Van Muyden is the daughter of Josh Van Muyden of Orange City and Rebecca Van Meeteren of Sheldon.

She was MOC-Floyd Valley School District student and enjoyed singing and playing her keyboard, according to her obituary. She had her first job at Hardee’s and was proud to be able to purchase her own shoes for her ever-growing shoe collection.

Her funeral service will be held at a later date. Arrangements are under the direction of Oolman Funeral Home in Orange City.
