Deputies: Driver ‘intentionally’ hit, killed pedestrian

OSHTEMO TOWNSHIP, Mich. (WOOD) — A driver near Kalamazoo intentionally hit a pedestrian on Tuesday, killing her, deputies say.

It happened around 12:10 p.m. at a Walmart in Oshtemo Township, located on 9th Street near W Main Street. A 65-year-old woman was walking through the parking lot when a maroon sedan hit her, the Kalamazoo County Sheriff’s Office said in a release. It said the driver did so “intentionally.”

She was taken to a local hospital, where she was pronounced dead, the sheriff’s office said.

Deputies say there is no known relationship between the woman and the suspect, a 32-year-old from Kalamazoo.

It is under investigation.

The suspect has been arrested and faces charges of 1st degree homicide.

Kristen Topp said she was grocery shopping inside at the time.

“I heard (someone) come in screaming and shouting. … I ran out there and saw what she was talking about,” Topp told News 8. “It was horrible. It was terrible.”

She said she saw the driver of the car took off.

“The driver had taken off toward 9th Street,” she said. “Two gentleman took after him and obviously they got him.”

Lori Ferrall, who co-owns West Main Nutrition next door to the Walmart, started recording the commotion on 9th Street. It wasn’t long until police arrived.

“I noticed two vehicles stopped in the middle of the road. One guy got out and started yelling. And I thought they … were going to fight,” Ferrall said. “Cop cars stopping in the middle of the road and they’re pointing, saying ‘Him, him, him, that guy.’ People were just trying to … surround him. But the cops had gotten him really fast and put him into the car right away.”

Topp said she hopes more answers will come about what happened.

“It’s going to wear on me for the rest of my life. To witness a death like that,” she said.

The Battle Creek police chief told News 8 his department received a report that a dark colored sedan drove through the parking lot of a Battle Creek Meijer on Monday and tried to hit a pedestrian. No one was hurt. He could not say if the two incidents are connected.
