The man accused in the 2018 killing of Fort Myers Police officer Adam Jobbers-Miller faces new charges after he struck an inmate at Naples Jail Center last week, the fourth addition since his arrest.

According to a Collier County Sheriff's Office arrest report, on Thursday an inmate was in the day room cleaning up trash and handing out supplies to other inmates.

The inmate walked to Wisner Desmaret's single-cell door when Desmaret attacked and struck him in the face with a closed fist, according to an arrest report.

The inmate fled and alerted housing deputies of the encounter, the affidavit says.

Deputies then met with the inmate Friday morning for questioning. He told deputies that while he cleaned the day room he thought he heard Desmaret calling for him, according to the affidavit.

He told authorities he asked Desmaret what he wanted. Desmaret struck him in the face, and he said he wanted to press charges on Desmaret, the report shows.

Deputies then reviewed security footage and confirmed the inmate told the truth.

Fort Myers police officer Adam Jobbers-Miller died July 28, 2018, shot seven days earlier while responding to a call involving Desmaret.

Desmaret faces several charges including first-degree murder; attempted murder of a second Fort Myers police officer; resisting an officer with violence; robbery; depriving an officer of his means of protection; aggravated assault on a law enforcement officer; burglary of a conveyance and grand theft.

Jobbers-Miller, 29, was a two-year veteran of the Fort Myers force when he was killed. Records show he had chased Desmaret in a case involving a stolen cell phone when Desmaret grabbed the service revolver and shot Jobbers-Miller in the head.

Desmaret's trial for the shooting death could begin as soon as Sept. 6, according to court documents filed earlier in July.

If a jury finds Desmaret guilty, he would face death in shooting of Jobbers-Miller the night of July 21, 2018. Legal representatives for Desmaret filed a motion Monday afternoon seeking to delay his tentatively scheduled trial.

The new motion filed Monday cites the defense intent to rely upon an insanity defense and how a delay in receiving an expected psychiatric evaluation could hamper their trial preparations.

In the most recent charge, Desmaret was charged with battery by a detained person in prison or jail.

This is the fourth time Desmaret received additional charges since being incarcerated at Naples Jail Center, records indicate. It's the second time he's charged with this particular count.

He's due in court Aug. 29 for the battery charge.

Safety concerns

Desmaret was transferred to Collier County's jail in August 2018 after safety became a concern at the Lee County Jail in Fort Myers.

Last year, Desmaret's defense attorney Andrew Crawford indicated he would pursue an insanity defense.

Desmaret faces the death penalty if convicted.
