Big Dog Ranch Rescue, a Florida no-kill and cage free dog shelter is set to open a location in Shorter in Macon County, said an announcement from the group.

The Shorter location is 100 acres and will serve as a "second home-base" for Big Dog Ranch Rescue.

"Our expansion will provide us with quarantine, rehabilitation, medical, and adoption facilities while growing with the resourceful community of Shorter, Alabama," the group stated on its website.

"More importantly, this campus will serve as a transitional hub for shelters in the Northeast allowing us to rescue and vet dogs from Southern states and transport adoptable dogs to our Northeastern rescue partners."

The location is expected to double the amount of dogs to be housed, with the hope of rescuing an estimated 5,000 dogs per year.
