ROMULUS (WWJ) -- A 20-year-old Downriver man has been charged with murder for the slaying of a 17-year-old boy over the weekend.

Jaylin Julius Colon, of Flat Rock, was arraigned in 34th District Court in Romulus Tuesday afternoon in connection with the killing in Huron Township, early Saturday morning.

According to police, Colon and the victim — identified by prosecutors as Gavino Torres, III of Detroit — were both at home in the 20340 block of Wahrman Rd., about a mile from Detroit Metro Airport, when Colon drew a handgun just after 3 a.m.

It's alleged that Colon then shot Torres, although it's not clear why.

Police and EMS responded to the scene to find Torres suffering from gunshot wounds to his arm and abdomen. He was treated at the scene and then taken to a local hospital where he was pronounced dead, police said.

Colon fled the scene before police arrived, but turned himself in at the Huron Township Police Department later that day.

He is charged by the Wayne County Prosecutor's Office with one count of second-degree murder, one count of carrying a concealed weapon, and one count of felony firearm.

Authorities have not released any information as to how the Colon and Torres were acquainted.

Colon was given a $100,000 cash/surety bond and is scheduled to appear in court again for a probable cause conference on Aug. 17. He faces up to life in prison if convicted on the murder charge.

Editor's note: Following the shooting on Saturday, Huron Township police identified the victim as a Wyandotte resident. An update from the prosecutor's office on Tuesday stated that the victim was a Detroit resident.
