Canyon County Dispatch received a call regarding possible animal cruelty in Caldwell on Aug. 6. The caller heard a dog "yelping" outside and captured video of a man hitting a dog in front of their home.
Caldwell police responded but could not find the man in the area. The video of the man circulated online for a few days until a Caldwell resident reported themselves as the person in the video.
The owner and his dog were identified as the same person and animal in the video.
Caldwell police officers took the dog on Tuesday and took it to the West Valley Humane Society. The owner was issued a misdemeanor citation for animal cruelty with a court appearance date and released.
We saw the video, it's extremely disturbing to me, my staff, to anyone that views this video, including everyone in the community and their concerns are valid,
There were no obvious signs of injury on the dog, police say and the dog wasn't afraid of the owner. Citations were also given to the owner for not owning a dog license and not providing current rabies vaccinations.
The dog's owner was cooperative with investigators. The owner said in an interview with officers that the reason he hit his dog was frustration with being late for work and the dog had escaped the fence.
