An Air Evac medical helicopter lands on I-57 to take a truck driver injured in the crash south of the Salem exit to a regional hospital for treatment.

State Police have released further details on two crashes both involving two trucks in different locations on I-57 in Marion County.

The first crash occurred on southbound I-57 near milepost 113 three miles south of Salem.  A preliminary investigation indicates 61-year-old Matthew Shuman of Flora was traveling northbound in the right lane when he lost control of the vehicle, crossed over the grass median, and struck the trailer unit of a southbound truck driven by 55-year-old Mio Drasko of Hoffman Estates.   Shuman then continued through the guardrail on the west side of the southbound lanes.

Shuman was airlifted from the scene by Air Evac Life Flight to a regional hospital with non-life threatening injuries.   He was ticketed for improper lane usage.  Drasko declined medical treatment.

Salem Fire Protection District Firemen had to force open the door of Shuman’s truck to get him out.  His load of crude oil did not spill.

Drasko’s truck trailer reportedly was ripped open on one side with his cargo spilling onto the road.

The southbound lanes of the interstate were closed for about two and a half hours during cleanup.   The crash was reported at 11:32 am.

The second crash occurred on southbound I-57 at milepost 127 near the Kinmundy exit.

Preliminary reports indicate a rig driven by 50-year-old Oleg Rudoy of Palm Beach Gardens, Florida was traveling slowly when he was struck in the rear by a semi-driven by 47-year-old Brandan Hall of Cairo.

Hall was taken to an area hospital for treatment of injuries.  Charges are pending investigation.

Kinmundy-Alma firemen used an extinguisher to put out a small engine fire in the Hall rig.  I-57 traffic was reduced to one lane during the cleanup.   The crash occurred at 5:50 Monday night.

A tanker truck involved in the Monday morning crash on I-57 south of Salem comes to rest off the west side of the roadway.
