A sanitation worker who stepped out of his truck and into the path of a deputy’s car in Pompano Beach died Saturday, and traffic homicide detectives are investigating, authorities said.

Pedro Lugo-Bello, a 59-year-old Miami resident, stopped his sanitation truck in the shared designated left turn lane in front of a construction site in the 1100 block of North Ocean Boulevard on July 29, according to the Broward Sheriff’s Office.

Deputy Symone Bullard, a 28-year-old with almost three years on the job, hit Lugo-Bello with her 2015 Dodge Charger as Lugo-Bello stepped out of his truck and directly into the deputy’s path, officials said.

Bullard, who was hospitalized and released, reported the crash and attempted to aid Lugo-Bello before he was hospitalized.

Investigators said speed doesn’t appear to be a factor in the crash.
