Matthew B. Hall has been charged with first-degree attempted murder, third-degree possession of a weapon for an unlawful purpose and fourth-degree unlawful possession of a weapon for the assault.

Prosecutor John P. McDonald said that just after 12:30 a.m. on July 23, detectives from the Franklin Township Police Department and the prosecutor's office responded to a local hospital regarding a report of a man suffering stab wounds.

The victim told authorities that the incident initially began as a verbal altercation with Hall at a gas station in Franklin Township and that Hall allegedly put his hands on him. The victim responded by shoving Hall.

Hall then fled the gas station and retrieved a weapon from the trunk of his vehicle, according to the prosecutor's office.

As the victim drove away from the gas station, Hall allegedly attempted to strike the victim with the weapon. He then got into his car and followed the victim.

According to the office, Hall pulled up next to the victim's car as it was stopped at a traffic light on Demott Lane and Easton Avenue and started stabbing him, aiming for his neck and chest.

The victim attempted to block the assault, resulting in stab wounds to his hand and bicep. His injuries appeared to be non-life-threatening.

Anyone with information about the stabbing was asked to contact the office’s major crimes unit at (908) 231-7100 or the Franklin Township Police Department at (732) 873-5533.
