Students strolled into Brewbaker Middle School early Tuesday morning for the first day of school. They wore the shirt colors for their grades and khaki pants, skirts and shorts.

Terrence Vaughn, the school football coach as well as one of its bus drivers, said the students were quiet and sleepy on the ride to school.

In contrast, the new Brewbaker Middle principal, Jaime Dubei, was excited for the day. She wore a flower in her hair, which became her signature style, she said, after a girl in New York City complimented it.

Victoria Ham make her way to the front door before the first day of school at Brewbaker Elementary School in Montgomery, Ala., on Tuesday, Aug. 9, 2022.

"Queens, New York, is a little different than Montgomery," she said. "But schools are the same. People are the same. And, I'm really excited to be here."
