Salem Grade School Superintendent Dr. Leslie Foppe told the school board Monday night that a plan is in place to start school on time next week even though not all the work at Hawthorn School will be complete.

Foppe says the new modular classroom building with four classrooms, two offices, and two bathrooms is now set to arrive on Wednesday or Thursday with five days needed to get it in place and ready for students.    She says alternative space has been found for the students scheduled to be in the four classrooms.

“We are going to have one class in the Title room because we have a classroom for them I know.  Go around to the classrooms and help them.  And then we are going to open up the library to the other classes that need to go in there.”

Foppe wants to make sure everything is safe before the new building is utilized.   She notes while the building has been ready for over a month, truck drivers have just been found to drive the building to Salem.

The new multi-purpose building at the front of Hawthorne School will not be ready as a result of heating and air conditioning units being delayed.

“It will be nice to have, but we have been doing it this way for so long so a little longer won’t hurt us.  But as everything is delayed we are waiting for the HVAC system to arrive and to complete.  But they already have the ceiling up so it won’t take that long.”

Foppe says the new is better at Franklin Park Middle School where all the flooring replacement and other inside work is completed and the new parking lot is completed and will be ready to drive on beginning next Monday.

The first day for teachers at Salem Grade School District is next Monday, August 15th.  The first day for students is next Tuesday, August 16th.

The board acted on a number of personnel issues.   Resignations were accepted from teachers Melissa Fehrenbacher and Alex Koebele.  The board employed five new teachers.  Amanda Litteken will teach physical education for grades first through fifth, Morgan Follett for second grade, Chelsea Schnautz for third grade, Brian Husk for 4th grade and Laura Meier as 8th grade Language Arts Teacher.

The board approved the transfers of Wendy Morris as Title 1 teacher at Franklin Park and Cory Harris as 2nd and 3rd grade Special Education teacher.

The board hired Kody Williamson as night time custodian.

The district is still short three paraprofessionals and one custodian.
