Oregon's Cascades could see severe weather Tuesday afternoon. Strong winds and large hail threaten Oregon's high country Tuesday afternoon and evening, but it's lightning that posses the the biggest threat.
Dry lightning is associated with thunderstorms with very little rain. These storms usually produce lightning and strong winds. That could potentially start and spread new wildfires over a relatively dry landscape.
Central Oregon sits in a "marginal" risk for severe weather Tuesday afternoon. That's a one out of five chance to see severe thunderstorms. Lightning doesn't fall under the severe weather category, but it will remain the biggest threat to starting potentially new wildfires Tuesday.
The National Weather Service issued a "Fire Weather Warning" that goes into effect Tuesday at 2:00 pm. That's when the thunderstorm activity will begin. That warning lasts through Wednesday morning.
This all comes as the Cedar Creek Fire continues to burn just west of Waldo Lake and east of Oakridge. As of Monday evening, the fire has burned 3,234 acres of land after starting on August 1, 2022.
Smoke from the Cedar Creek Fire will continue to keep skies hazy over Western Oregon through Wednesday.
