SOUTH HAVEN (WWJ) - A Metro Detroit man is among two people who died after being pulled unresponsive from the waters of Lake Michigan on Monday, authorities confirmed.

The South Haven Area Emergency Services said on social media that personnel, along with the South Haven Police Department, responded to South Beach on reports of two possible drownings around 12:40 p.m. on Monday.

Prior to police and EMS arrival, officials said bystanders pulled two unresponsive people from the water. First responders immediately rendered aid once they arrived on-site.

The two victims, identified only as a 22-year-old Novi man and a 21-year-old woman from Columbus, Mich., were transported to Bronson South Haven Hospital for further emergency care.

Authorities report both victims were pronounced dead.

"Out of respect to the family, and to confirm notification, names of the victims will be released at a later date," police said via The Detroit News. "Our thoughts and condolences are with both families."

According to SHAES, a yellow flag was flying at South Beach at the time of the incident, indicating swimmers and guests should exercise caution when in the water due to moderate surf and currents.

Red flags were raised later in the day.

The latest drownings come not even 24 hours after crews recovered the body of a 21-year-old swimmer who was swept offshore in Grand Haven.

Officials said 28 people have died in Lake Michigan this year.
