People of interest detained in deadly drive-by shooting

CARBONDALE, LACKAWANNA COUNTY (WBRE/WYOU) — Police have confirmed that people of interest have been detained after a man was shot and killed in a drive-by shooting in Lackawanna County around 11:30 p.m. on Monday night.

Lackawanna County Coroner, Timothy Rowland, told Eyewitness News that Pernell Simmons, age 35, was identified as the man who died from multiple gunshot wounds in Carbondale.

Rowland said Simmons was declared dead at the scene shortly before midnight on Monday.

This came as a shock to the community at the Fallbrook Apartments.

“I’m scared. I was scared. I’m like oh my God,” said Tracy Nossavage, the victim’s neighbor.

Residents at Fallbrook apartments in Carbondale woke up to the sight of skid marks and police tape.

“I was scared, nervous, in shock—still in shock. This is a pretty nice place. I never thought anything like that would happen here,” Nossavage told Eyewitness News.

Police were called to Fallbrook Street just before midnight for reports of a shooting on Monday night.

Neighbors in the community never thought a man would now be dead after police said he was shot and killed in a drive-by shooting.

“It’s a quiet place. I’ve lived here a year and everything is quiet. People are nice. It’s shocking,” said Millie Smith, a neighbor of the victim’s.

Residents at the apartment complex were surprised by the violence and want justice for the person killed.

“I just feel bad for the family. My heart goes out to them,” Smith said.

As of 11 a.m. on Tuesday, Carbondale police and Pennsylvania State Police have not confirmed if the shooter is still at large.

Eyewitness News is waiting to learn the identity of the victim.

This is an active investigation.
