LINCOLN, Neb. —
Nebraska Democratic Chair Jane Kleeb hailed the announcement made by Gov. Ricketts Monday that there will not be a special session on abortion.

Speaker Mike Hilgers informed him 30 state senators agreed to the special session -- short of the 33 needed to break a filibuster on any abortion-related legislation.
Kleeb released the following statement:
This is good news, but we must remain vigilant when the regular session convenes in January. Poll after poll has shown that a majority of Nebraskans support abortion rights. But there are radical Republican senators that will keep trying to erode reproductive rights.
The majority of Nebraskans support keeping access to abortion legal. Governor Ricketts and his radical Republicans do not have the votes to further infringe on our privacy and rights to make our own health decisions. Voters have an opportunity to defend legal access to abortion at the polls this November by electing more Democrats to the Legislature, Congress and the governor’s office.
State Senator and Democratic nominee for Governor Carol Blood responded to the announcement:
The released letter is meant to create blame so they can say it's not their fault, so they don't look bad keeping their promise for a special session. There is also no bill. Why would I consider going into special session for something make believe or a what if?
