11 units damaged, 23 people displaced after Elizabeth City fire

ELIZABETH CITY, N.C. (WAVY) — The Elizabeth City Fire Department responded to a massive fire at the Emerald Lake Apartments Tuesday morning.

According to officials, the fire started around 2:45 a.m. in the 1500 block of Emerald Lake Circle.

Elizabeth City Fire Chief Chris Carver said the three-story apartment building sustained heavy fire damage throughout the structure.

It took crews an hour and 45 minutes to get the fire under control. 11 units were damaged in the fire, displacing 23 residents. The American Red Cross is assisting.

One of those occupants went to the hospital with a minor injury.

More than 50 firefighters responded to this scene; none were injured.

The cause of the fire is still under investigation by the Elizabeth City Fire Department and the State Fire Marshal.
