FRANKFORT — Joan Louise (Mason) Crook, of Frankfort, passed away with her daughters at her side on her 87th birthday on Saturday, August 6, 2022, at Eastern Star Home in Redfield.

Visitation for Joan will be from 5 to 7 p.m. with a prayer service starting at 7 p.m. Friday at Hyke Funeral Home in Redfield. The family will be present to accept condolences.  

Her funeral service will be 10:30 a.m. Saturday at the Redfield United Methodist Church in Redfield.  Pastor Melissa Rowenhorst will officiate. Burial will follow the service at Greenlawn Cemetery in Redfield.

After the burial, there will be refreshments and fellowship at the church. Her funeral service will be livestreamed to the funeral home’s website, below Joan’s obituary.     

 
Joan Louise Mason was born August 6, 1935, to Bert and Ada (Gilbert) Mason at Redfield. She joined four older brothers on the farm at Frankfort. While growing up she attended Red Star Country School and later Redfield High School.
Joan eloped with Lyle Crook on July 23, 1953, in Lake Benton, Minn., while he was home on leave.  He then returned to Korea and Joan completed high school in Redfield; graduating in 1954.

Later that year when Lyle returned they settled on the farm near Frankfort. Joan worked various jobs including Syverson Drug Store, Spink County Bank, and as a cook at the Doland School.  

Lyle and Joan had two daughters, Jackie and Mickie. Both families farm in the Frankfort area.  

Lyle and Joan enjoyed traveling and spent almost 25 years wintering in Ariz. After retiring from farming in 1994 they moved into Redfield. In 2011 they then moved to an apartment at Eastern Star Home.

Joan enjoyed cooking and especially baking. She was active in the United Methodist Women and Red Hat Club. She was a member of the Frankfort United Methodist Church and later the Redfield United Methodist Church. She enjoyed spending time with her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. They will remember her for the wonderful hugs. Time spent with friends at coffee parties or just short visits was very much enjoyed. Her bubbly personality and smile will be greatly missed by many.  

Surviving her are her two daughters: Jackie (Ted) Pazour and Mickie (Alan) Johnson; five grandchildren: Brian (Jamie) Johnson, Audrey (Johnny) Rider, Sarah (Lee) Kessler, Jason (Ivy) Pazour, and Lisa (Mark) Smith. She also leaves 12 great-grandchildren: Ella, Lila, Leo, and Evelyn Johnson, Ada and Annie Rider, Lydia, Kaydee, and Dawson Kessler, Chase and Tanner Pazour, and Brantley Smith. Joan is also survived by her sisters-in-law: Marie Mason of Redfield, Crystal Appel of Redfield and Virginia (Lewis) Kirkland of Comanche, Texas; and a brother-in-law, Berwyn Crook of Warminster, Pa.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Lyle in 2020. Also preceding her were her parents and four brothers: Gene, Duane, Maurice, and Daelyn as well as several brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law.

In lieu of flowers the family prefers memorials to be directed to the Eastern Star Home and the Redfield United Methodist Church in memory of Joan.
