The Portland City Council approved five citizen's referendums to go to the November 8 ballot during a public hearing on Monday.
Four of the five referendums are backed by the Maine Democratic Socialists of America. Those include an initiative that would raise Portland's minimum wage to $18 an hour, which would make it the third highest minimum wage in America, and also eliminate the tipped credit for service workers, which DSA members referred to as a "subminimum wage."
The other initiatives would curtail cruise ships that enter Portland, increase protections for tenants, and two which involve restricting short-term rentals such as Airbnb.
Members of the council attempted to adopt the cruise ship initiative for the purpose of amending it before it goes into effect, but the measure failed.
