Man dies after car carrier trailer goes through red light, hits two vehicles, cops say

One driver died and two other people were taken to the hospital after a Monday afternoon crash in Hunterdon County involving three vehicles including a car carrier trailer, authorities said.

The trailer was driving north on US Highway 202 shortly after 2:30 p.m. when it failed to stop at red light and struck a Nissan Altima and a Nissan commercial van as they crossing through an intersection, according to a statement from the Raritan Township Police Department. The Nissans were both traveling west on Dory Dilts Road.

The driver of the Altima, John Monahan, 77, of Readington Township, was severely injured in the crash and was rushed to Hunterdon Medical Center where he was pronounced dead, police said.

The two occupants of the van were taken to local hospitals for treatment for non-life threatening injuries and the driver of the trailer was treated at the scene for his injuries, the department said.

The crash remained under investigation Monday night by the department and the Hunterdon County Prosecutor’s Office.
