DANVILLE, Va. (WFXR) — A Danville-based disaster relief organization, God’s Pit Crew, is rebuilding three homes at the same time for people in Virginia’s neighboring states who lost everything to deadly tornadoes.
Last December, deadly tornadoes swept through Benton and Dawson Springs, Kentucky, as well as Dresden, Tennessee. As a result, the nonprofit says these three places will be the sites of the new homes in the coming weeks.
God’s Pit Crew says this is the first time its volunteers and staff will build three homes simultaneously. On top of that, not only will the crews rebuild the homes, but they will also furnish and decorate them all for free.
Officials say construction started on Monday, Aug. 8 and will take 19 days, with the homes set to be revealed to the families between Aug. 26 and Aug. 30.
When the homes are finished, the organization will have built five homes for the December tornado victims.
“There have been so many terrible disasters recently. So many families have lost everything and need help desperately. Our hearts break for them,” said the founder and president of God’s Pit Crew, Randy Johnson. “We are grateful to provide new homes for these families and to send supplies and volunteers to help after the recent floods. We offer our heartfelt thanks to our volunteers and donors who make this possible.”
This news comes as members of the nonprofit’s Immediate Response Team — who recently spent two weeks helping southwest Virginia flooding victims — prepare to deploy to eastern Kentucky to help survivors of the recent catastrophic floods.
The organization tells WFXR News it has sent several tractor-trailer loads of emergency supplies to Kentucky, including its Blessing Buckets, water, Gatorade, cleaning supplies, and generators.
“Our Blessing Bucket program staff visited eastern Kentucky this week to deliver Blessing Buckets door-to-door,” God’s Pit Crew said in a statement to WFXR News on Monday, Aug. 8. “The Buckets contain non-perishable food, hygiene and first-aid supplies, a Bible, and a hand-written, encouraging note.”
