LIVONIA (WWJ) – Two men are in custody at the hospital after leading Detroit police officers and Michigan State Police troopers on a chase that ended in a fiery wreck in Livonia late Monday afternoon.

MSP officials say a 25-year-old murder suspect and a 46-year-old man were headed westbound on I-96 near Merriman Road in a stolen vehicle shortly after 5 p.m. when Detroit police officers called for assistance.

Troopers in the area joined the chase. When troopers caught up with the suspect vehicle, officials say the driver exited northbound I-275 to 6 Mile Road.

When the suspect got off the freeway, still traveling at a high speed, the driver lost control and the car ran off the road and rolled over down the embankment, MSP officials said.

Authorities say the 25-year-old suspect, who was a passenger in the car, was ejected, while the driver was thrown to the back of the vehicle, which caught fire after coming to a rest.

Troopers treated both men for injuries at the scene before they were taken to a hospital by the Livonia Fire Department.

The Detroit Police Department is handling the charges for both subjects and are with the suspects at the hospital, according to MSP. It was not clear what charges will be brought in connection to Monday’s police chase.

Authorities have not released the name of either man. Both are said to have non-life-threatening injuries. No troopers, DPD officers or other drivers were injured.

Details of the alleged murder have not been disclosed.

MSP officials were investigating the crash, which left the exit ramp from I-275 to 6 Mile closed for several hours.
