LYNN, MASS. (WHDH) - Surveillance footage captured the frantic scene outside the Thurgood Marshall Middle School in Lynn after police said a man opened fire, sending spectators at a basketball tournament running for cover.

Neighbor Graciela Barroso’s home security cameras were rolling as people crouched behind parked cars and hid next to garage sheds Friday night.

“People were covering right behind my house, right behind those cars,” said Barroso.

According to police, the shooting happened just as the popular Shoe City Basketball Tournament had wrapped up. Two cars were struck by gunfire, the driver of one having to duck to miss the bullets. Police could be seen in the security footage looking for evidence. Police said they found five shell casings.

Local business owner John Conti said his property was searched for evidence.

“The police came by and said there was a shooting, and then they came back, I guess later, and they told him they had one of the suspects, and they thought the suspect threw a gun over our fence, and they were looking for it,” said Conti.

State Troopers arrested 25-year-old Canseco Mirillo on August 6, the day after the shooting, charging him with armed assault to murder. The police said Mirillo is well known to them, having been shot at by a woman who stole his gun back in 2018.

Officials said Mirillo was on probation when he was arrested and is being held without bail.

The basketball tournament has been canceled.
