August 8 Random Observations Of The Grand Lake Bum

We had a perfect Grand Lake weather weekend to prepare everybody for heading back to school this week – and everybody was here to enjoy it! The First Friday Wine Share brought lots of new visitors to the new businesses at The Layk Schoolhouse on Monkey Island Friday – and the annual Run a Monkey Golf Tournament at Shangri-La was the usual full-of-fun weekend for golfers while boaters enjoyed the float-up movie event at Marina Del Rey. I couldn’t find a Cobalt sticker to put on my ol’ Scarab, so I didn’t get in on the Cobalt owners’ festivities at Arrowhead, but I did manage to sponge some food & beverages off of Kevin McClure & his gang during the Hi-Lift Marina/Grand Lake Boat Sales Customer Appreciation fun. School may be starting, but we’re not slowing down the fun any at Grand Lake! The coming weekend is even bigger!!

I trust everybody is enjoying the most recent onslaught of political commercials and social media posts. You can sure tell it’s election month because there is nothing too small for people to argue about. Folks on the far right are mad at Cracker Barrel for offering plant-based “Impossible” meat as an option – and folks on the far left are mad at Starbucks for charging extra for optional plant-based milk products. I guess things must be in pretty good shape in this country if we’re down to worrying about stuff like that!

Speaking of new priority issues…the Grove City Council has approved a new ordinance allowing residents to have up to six chickens in their yards. No roosters. Just chickens. I wonder how long it will be before someone files a sex discrimination lawsuit on behalf of roosters.

Saturday games include Kansas City at Chicago at noon, Indianapolis at Buffalo at 3:00, Seattle at Pittsburgh at 6:00 and Dallas at Denver at 8:00. Sunday’s lone televised game sends Minnesota to Las Vegas.

There are also some great Major League Baseball games televised this weekend, including The Cubs at Cincinnati Thursday at 6:00 and Milwaukee at St. Louis Friday at 7:00. The Red Sox host the Yankees for a couple of games Saturday and Sunday at 6:00. Houston is at Chicago to face the White Sox Monday at 7:00; and the Yankees host Tampa Bay Tuesday at 6:00. The Brewers host the Dodgers next Wednesday at 8:45.

High temperatures aren’t likely to reach triple digits this weekend, but they’ll be close enough. Highs will be in the mid-90s with lows around 70 with days filled with sunshine and nights filled with stars. Perfect weather, as far as I’m concerned. It looks like great boating and golf weather, and there are plenty of great opportunities for both this week. Remember, though, no matter where you decide to party, be sure to buy a drink for the guy next to you. It could be me!
