EDISON – The impact of a rear end crash caused a “domino effect” of crashes involving seven motor vehicles in both directions of Route 1 that killed a 34-year-old township woman and seriously injured two children, according to Deputy Chief Robert J. Dudash Jr.

The incident occurred at 9:20 p.m. Aug. 6 on Route 1 south in the area of Edison Towne Square near the entrance of Top Golf and Tommy’s Tavern and Tap, Dudash said.

Catherine Yeboah was driving a Honda Accord on Route 1 north when her vehicle was hit head on by another vehicle that had “careened” from Route 1 south due to the impact of the “domino effect” crash.

Yeboah was transported to Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital in New Brunswick where she died of her injuries, Dudash said.

Two young girls, who were in the vehicle with Yeboah, suffered serious, but not life-threatening injuries, Dudash said.  A 6-year-old girl suffered internal injuries and a 3-year-old girl suffered a fractured clavicle, he said.

Two 19-year-old men, who were traveling in the same vehicle, also suffered serious, but not life-threatening injuries. One man suffered a broken wrist, and the other man suffered a broken leg, Dudash said.

The young girls and the men were transported to Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital and treated for their injuries, Dudash said.

Other injuries reported were minor in nature, Dudash said.

Police determined a 41-year-old Philadelphia man, who was driving a Honda Civic, had rear ended a motor vehicle turning into the Edison Towne Square, which set off the “domino effect” of crashes, Dudash said.

No charges have been filed at this time, Dudash said. The investigation is ongoing.

During the investigation, Route 1 was closed in both directions for several hours. The Woodbridge Township Police Department, New Jersey State Police and the New Jersey Department of Transportation assisted Edison police with traffic control.
