Lived In Europe During Mad Cow? You Can Now Donate Blood Again

Northwest Iowa — There’s a blood drive coming up in Sheldon, so it’s a good time to give you an update, in case you hadn’t heard the latest news about donating blood.

Community Blood Bank Executive Director Ken VerSteeg tells us there’s good news for those people who have wanted to donate blood, but due to the fact that they’ve lived or served in Europe, they haven’t been able to.

But now, he says, things are changing.

VerSteeg says many of those people are military, but the restriction affected anyone living in those areas at that time. He says they’re excited about it because one person’s donations could potentially save 18 people per year, and there were several people that were not allowed to give for a long time.

The next blood drive in Sheldon will be this Wednesday at Sanford Sheldon Medical Center between 12:30 & 3:30 PM. To schedule a donation, call 605-331-3222 or find a link on our community calendar at kiwaradio.com. The bloodmobile will also be outside in front of our KIWA studios and offices in downtown Sheldon on Thursday, September 15th.
