Two arrested in alleged assault in SF that left man with lacerations, fractured eye socket

San Francisco police have arrested two people in connection to an assault on McAllister Street last month.

Late on the morning of July 15, officers responded to a reported assault on McAllister Street. A 61-year-old man had reportedly been assaulted by two suspects, one of whom fled the scene prior to officers arriving. The victim reportedly lost consciousness during the assault and sustained a fractured eye socket and lacerations to his face that required stitches, police said.

One of the suspects, identified as 24-year-old Nelson Martinez, had been detained at the scene by the victim and witnesses. The victim positively identified Martinez as one of his attackers and Martinez was taken into custody, police said.

Martinez was later booked on suspicion of several charges including assault with a deadly weapon, conspiracy, and great bodily injury enhancements.

The second suspect remained at large for just over a week until, on July 27, officers received a tip that the individual had returned to the area of the original assault. Witnesses directed responding officers to a man identified as 21-year-old Andrew Morelopena, whom officers took into custody after a brief struggle.

Morelopena was medically cleared for minor injuries and arrested and booked on suspicion of assault with a deadly weapon, aggravated battery causing serious injury, and willfully resisting arrest, among other charges.
