The Oklahoma football Sooners check in at No. 9 in the initial Coaches Poll ranking of the 2022 season.

This is the seventh consecutive year, the Oklahoma football has begun the season ranked in the top 10 of the Coaches Poll, but it is also the lowest the Sooners have been ranked in the Preseason Coaches Poll since starting out at No. 8 in 2017, Lincoln Riley’s first season as the OU head coach.

Oklahoma has begun the season as a top 10-ranked team in the Coaches Poll in seven of the ;ast 10 seasons. The last time the Sooners were ranked outside of the top 10 in the Preseason Coaches Poll Top 25 was in 2015, when OU started out at No. 19.

Alabama is the top-ranked team, receiving 54 of the 61 total first-place votes. Ohio State is second with five first-place votes, Georgia third with six first-place votes, Clemson fourth and Notre Dame fifth.

The good news for Sooner fans is that Oklahoma is the highest-ranked Big 12 team in the first release of the 2022 Coaches Poll. Baylor and Oklahoma State are right behind, though, at No. 10 and 11, respectively. Texas is at No. 16.

Future Big 12 teams Cincinnati and Houston are also ranked in the Coaches Poll Top 25 to start out the season. Cincinnati is No. 22 and Houston No. 25. Lincoln Riley’s USC begins the season at No. 15, six spots below the Sooners.

The SEC, the future home of Oklahoma and Texas, led all conference with six teams ranked in the top 25, three of which landed in the top 10.

The Associated Press Preseason Top 25 is scheduled to be released a week from today on Aug. 15.
