Camden Post 17 punches ticket to American Legion World Series
A South Carolina team has advanced to the American Legion World Series for the first time since 2015.
Camden Post 17 scored six runs over the fifth and sixth innings Sunday to defeat Rock Hill Post 34, 7-5, and win the Southeast Regional at McCrary Park in Asheboro, North Carolina. It’s Camden’s first trip to the World Series after their first time playing in a regional.
Camden is the first S.C. team since Chapin-Newberry to make it to the American Legion World Series. Chapin-Newberry won the World Series that year.
The American Legion World Series will be Aug. 11-16 at Keeter Stadium in Shelby, North Carolina.
Camden Post 17’s first game will be 4 p.m. Thursday against the Western Regional champion.
It was the second meeting between the two teams in less than 24 hours. Rock Hill defeated Camden, 3-2, in a game that didn’t finish until early Sunday morning because of rain delays.
The two teams also met in the S.C. American Legion championship last week at Segra Park with Rock Hill winning. Both teams earned spots in the regional because the state of South Carolina was allowed two teams into the tournament.
Rock Hill Post 34 defeated Wilmington earlier Sunday to advance to the title game.
Post 34 led 3-0 going into the fifth inning before Camden scored twice to cut it to 3-2. After Rock Hill scored one in the bottom of the fifth to make it 4-2, Post 17 scored four times in the top of the sixth.
Jamari Harris had a two-run single and Max Branham had an RBI single in the sixth for Post 17.
Harris and Branaham each had two RBIs. Patrick Daniels and Wynn Ravan also had RBIs for Camden. Cobe Evans added two hits for Post 17.
Alex Simmons ;picked up the win in relief for Camden. The Blythewood High pitcher allowed two runs on three hits in four innings.
