MONROE, N.C. — A police chase in Monroe turned deadly when the driver crashed their pickup truck into a ditch Saturday evening near Highway 74, law enforcement tells Channel 9.
The chase started Saturday evening when a driver was reportedly under the influence in a McDonald’s parking lot. The Union County Sheriff’s Office told Channel 9 the driver then led Monroe Police officers on a chase before crashing around 8:30 p.m.
Details about the chase weren’t given, but the sheriff’s office said deputies found the pickup truck wrecked near Highway 74 and Chamber Drive. The driver was taken to a hospital, where they later died.

The driver hasn’t been identified yet. Highway Patrol tells Channel 9 the incident is still under investigation.
