ROANOKE, Va. (WFXR) — First responders took multiple injured people to the hospital after a vehicle crashed into a Roanoke building early Sunday morning, sparking a fire.

Roanoke Fire-EMS says crews were dispatched shortly after 3:30 a.m. on Sunday, Aug. 7 for reports of a vehicle crash and a structure fire in the 3700 block of Peters Creek Road. When units arrived at the scene, they found heavy smoke and flames coming from a commercial building.

Because of the size of the fire, the department says crews could only perform a “defensive fire attack.”

According to fire officials, the people inside the vehicle were brought to the hospital with non-life-threatening injuries. However, there is no word on the number of people hospitalized or their current condition.

The department tells WFXR News the fire was deemed accidental, adding that it was caused by the vehicle crashing into the building.

Roanoke Fire-EMS wrote on Facebook that the incident resulted in an estimated $350,000 worth of damage to the building — which was ruled a total loss — and its contents.
