Former Oklahoma football stars Joe Mixon, Dede Westbrook show their support of Cale Gundy.

With longtime former Oklahoma football coach Cale Gundy resigning in disgrace late Sunday night, many former Sooners stars, including Joe Mixon and Dede Westbrook, showed their support of him over social media.

Given that Gundy had been ever-present on the OU staff since 1999, he clearly touched the lives of many Sooners greats who walked through the football building. However, one incredibly stupid lack of judgment caused him to resign from his post as wide receiver coach. It was controversial for him to step down, as many players wanted to keep him on staff after reading off a racial slur.

Here is Mixon showing his support of Gundy on Twitter in the early minutes of Monday morning.

And here is Westbrook echoing the same sentiment a few minutes later after Mixon tweeted.

With Mixon being the star running back of the AFC champion Cincinnati Bengals and Westbrook being a former Biletnikoff winner and Heisman Trophy finalist, their tweets speak volumes here.

No matter how you feel about Mixon, Westbrook and others’ comments about the situation, one thing is certain: Oklahoma has not had an offseason quite like this in a generation. The Sooners had been a bastion of stability under the iconic Bob Stoops. Prior to going Hollywood, Lincoln Riley seemed to be operating in a similar vein leading the Sooners. Now, it is up to Brent Venables.

After spending a decade as Clemson’s renowned defensive coordinator, Venables returns to Norman a new man. Unfortunately, we haven’t seen OU this chaotic since the end of the John Blake era. Either way, Venables looks to be the right man to ride this thing out, as the Sooners will transition from a Big 12 behemoth to just another strong SEC program in a few seasons’ time.

Ultimately, the times they are a-changing in Oklahoma. While it is incredibly unfortunate that Gundy has to go out like this, the Sooners have a season to prepare for. L’Damian Washington will now take over as the interim wide receivers coach. But despite all this newfangled adversity, Oklahoma is on a shortlist of teams who can win the Big 12 in Baylor, Oklahoma State and Texas.

The Sooners will commence the Venables era in Norman when UTEP comes to town on Sept. 3.
